The Abe administration continues to reveal how undemocratic its stance is with a host of issues that include the Moritomo Gakuen scandal and controversial comments about the Tohoku disaster made by Masahiro Imamura. Despite this, the government still seeks to force through the resumption of nuclear power facilities. In April 2014, an undesirable amendment was made to the Strategic Energy Plan, stating that nuclear power was an important base-load power source. This prefaced the push toward nuclear facility restarts. Although public opinion polls show that the overwhelming majority of people want a nuclear-free Japan, the government has presupposed the will of established interests and has taken the self-righteous step of attempting to resume nuclear facilities.

On May 17, 2017, the number four reactor at the Takahama Plant in Fukui Prefecture was restarted in defiance of the will of the people. The number three reactor is scheduled for restart at the beginning of June while it has been reported that the number three and four reactors of the Oi Plant will be brought online before the end of the year. On top of this, at the end of April the mayor of Saga Prefecture expressed consent with the restart of the Genkai nuclear facility and related procedures have been completed. In all of these cases, new regulatory standards and the government are trying to force through the restart of facilities without a clear evacuation plan, which has been left to the local people to deal with, much the same as the Sendai and Ikata facilities when they were rebooted.

The Abe administration also has a stake in the export of nuclear technology, pushing ahead with the Japan-India nuclear deal. Toshiba’s slumping business caused by its U.S. nuclear unit Westinghouse Electric stresses that there is no future in nuclear operations. Despite this, the government continues to push the nuclear industry. In addition, the police are even running drills to counter a possible terrorist attack on a nuclear facility. Promoting nuclear energy while fully cognizant of the danger it poses to defense makes no sense.

Not only is nuclear energy hazardous to people’s health and does radiation pollute the environment, but it also violates personal rights and dignity, resulting in an outpouring of national wealth. It is the responsibility of us adults to reverse this energy policy without delay and not to leave behind the negative legacy of the twentieth century for our children, the leaders of the next generation. There is enough electricity without nuclear power, and as such, there is no justifiable reason to power up the reactors.

Join us on July 7 in front of parliament and the prime minister’s office to express our disapproval of the government’s actions and our desire for a nuclear-free Japan and world.

We will be protesting the government’s proposed restart of the Sendai nuclear reactor.
We believe that no reactors should be fired up. Currently, Japan is not using any nuclear reactors and we aim to keep it that way.

The reality:

The LDP Party has backed away from the “zero-nuclear” policy proposed by the Democratic Party of Japan administration and elucidated the restart of nuclear facilities in its energy action plan. Most citizens have made it clear that they would like Japan to be free of nuclear power plants and the current administration is making a mockery of popular will. This must not be tolerated.
In addition, plans are in place to restart nuclear facilities in each area despite the fact that evacuation plans have not been formulated. The government is currently trying to restart the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture.
The Sendai facility has a high risk of explosion and should not be restarted under any circumstances. The key focus of efforts going forward will be to prevent the restart of this facility.
The bigger the demonstrations and protests, the more likely they will become news. Also, the more people that see what is going on, the more likely we will get mass action. Large-scale demonstrations will put pressure on the government. This is a democratic action and anyone can participate.
Indirect democracy has become dysfunctional nowadays and we need to re-visualize our hope for the future by confronting the government.
