March 8 Demonstration: For a Better Future for Fukushima
The time has come to decommission Japan’s nuclear reactors and embrace renewable energy
Let’s aim for a new government with a no-nuclear agenda
Date: 14:00-16:00 March 8, 2020 (Sunday)
Venue: In front of parliament building main gate (south garden side)
*No protest in front of PM’s official residence
Organizer: Metropolitan Coalition Against Nukes (MCAN)
An unprecedented earthquake struck eastern Japan on March 11, 2011, with the Tohoku region most severely hit. We’d like to acknowledge the ninth anniversary of the deaths of all the people in the disaster. Besides the devastation caused by the natural earthquake and tsunami, we must also never forget the man-made disaster brought by the Fukushima nuclear incident. Areas affected by the natural disaster can be rebuilt while people are unable to live in areas contaminated by radioactivity.
Even though nine years have passed since the nuclear accident, many people are still living in evacuation centers and countless numbers of citizens have given up returning to their hometowns. In addition, there have been no resolutions to the nuclear power plant issues and decommission plans have stalled. It also remains unclear how the tritium-contaminated water will be treated. This year the Tokyo Olympics will be held even though the declaration of a nuclear emergency issued in 2011 has not been lifted. Should this year’s event be rebranded as the “Reconstruction Olympics”?
Many voters acknowledge the dangers of the Fukushima nuclear situation and an overwhelming majority of people have called for the decommissioning of Japan’s nuclear power plants. Overseas, some countries are abandoning nuclear power and others are refusing to accept Japan’s nuclear exports. Despite this trend, the Abe administration has been promoting nuclear energy by reversing the path toward denuclearization introduced by the Democratic Party of Japan. This can be attributed at least partially to vested interests. Mr. Takaya Imai, Special Advisor to Prime Minister Abe, is an active proponent of nuclear energy and is often referred to as the shadow PM, clearly has vested interests.
Nonetheless, the nuclear industry is on the decline. There is enough electricity without nuclear power and while constrained by government policy we know that there is sufficient potential in renewable energy going forward. The Pope, who visited Japan in 2019, spoke on behalf of the people when he urged a rethink of reliance on nuclear power. We need to get rid of the inept Abe administration and do what we can to realize a policy of zero nuclear energy before a full decade passes since the nuclear disaster. Fukushima can only truly recover and shine again once nuclear power has been abandoned.
