The fifth No Nukes Day planned for September 23 (Tuesday, public holiday) by Metropolitan Coalition Against Nukes, Sayonara Genpatsu 10 Million People’s Action and Genpatsu wo Nakusu Zenkoku Renrakukai has been postponed following a decision made by the three organizations in accord with the closure of Yoyogi Park due to the recent outbreak of Dengue Fever there.

NO NUKES DAY will be held at a later date in line with the reopening of Yoyogi Park. Details will be announced separately.

Please note that Sayonara Genpatsu 10 Million People’s Action will be holding a separate “no nukes” rally and march from 12:30pm on September 23 at the alternative venue of Kameido Chuo Park. Please see their website for details (http://sayonara-nukes.org/).

Appeal:
One year has passed since operation of the No. 4 reactor of the Oi Nuclear Power Plant was halted for routine inspection on September 15, 2013, marking zero nuclear facilities online in Japan. Since that time, there has been no deficiency of electricity in Japan, which proves that the country does not need nuclear power and that this industry has been propped up by lies and deceit.

Despite this, certain power-hungry individuals and groups have been trying to restart nuclear facilities throughout Japan, beginning with the Sendai Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The Sendai facility does not have adequate volcano or earthquake countermeasures or even a proper evacuation plan. Although Prime Minister Abe stated that Japan’s standards for restarting nuclear power plants were the best in the world, other countries have far stricter regulations under which Japanese facilities would surely not be permitted to go online.

Restarting nuclear facilities while the government and Nuclear Regulatory Commission neglect the Fukushima Daiichi disaster and wash their hands of safety commitments is an outrage.

It is thought that between 70-80% of Japan’s population are opposed to nuclear power. Even against this backdrop, Abe and the Liberal Democratic Party have stated to the Chairman of Kyushu Electric Power Co. that they will do everything they can to ensure the nuclear facility restarts. This is in complete neglect of the people’s opinion and is simply pandering to big business.

Accordingly, we are organizing NO NUKES Day on September 23, 2014 (Tuesday, public holiday) to try and put a stop to the nuclear program being put forward by the reckless Abe government. There will be a rally and march dedicated to ending nuclear power in Japan.

We must not forget the accident that happened at Fukushima Daiichi as well as the many victims that resulted. We are calling for tens of thousands of people from around Japan to come together and help us push toward a nuclear free Japan as soon as possible.
