July 7 NO NUKES DEMONSTRATION:
ENERGY AUTONOMY!
Zero nuclear power and no reactor reboots!
~Pushing for a fundamental review of the Basic Energy Plan and a stop to the Japan-U.S. Nuclear Cooperation Agreement and nuclear fuel cycle~
Date: 17:00~19:00 July 7, 2018 (Saturday)
Venue: In front of parliament building main gate (south garden side)
*No protest in front of PM’s official residence
Organizer: Metropolitan Coalition Against Nukes (MCAN)
Japan’s Fifth Basic Energy Plan was announced on May 16, 2018. Despite referring to renewable energy as a core power source, it also continues to position nuclear power as an important base-load power source and maintains the current figures for Japan’s energy mix. The target of 20-22% nuclear power in FY2030 will be extremely difficult to achieve without the construction of new nuclear facilities, however.
In this draft, maintaining nuclear power is stated as an option to help Japan decarbonize, but it makes no sense to treat decarbonized power generation and the use of dangerous nuclear material in the same way. The draft also states that nuclear power is required to raise energy self-sufficiency, but a premise to this is the treatment of uranium imported as nuclear material and re-processed as “semi home-grown energy.” This is deceptive logic and merely a push to promote nuclear energy.
Despite the fact that some people still cannot return home due to radioactive contamination from the devastating nuclear accident of March 11, 2011, the Abe administration continues to ignore overwhelming public opinion on nuclear energy, clinging to the status quo to appease certain interests. Japan is falling behind the global trend toward natural energy, instead sticking to an irresponsible plan to promote dangerous nuclear power while having no idea how to deal with radioactive waste.
Nuclear power is no longer the savior it was once heralded to be, but rather a monument of negativity with the ability to destroy humankind. If we don’t abolish it as soon as possible, many people understand that this will only result in us leaving a very negative legacy for future generations. No matter how desperate the Abe administration is to restart nuclear facilities, the fact of the matter is that nuclear power currently covers less than 2% of Japan’s power. The government’s energy policy should therefore be completely overhauled without delay.
